Aston Villa Football Club formed as long ago as 1874 and their home ground, Villa Park, is based in the English Midlands. Villa Park is actually a UEFA 5-star rated stadium and it is recognised as the eighth largest stadium in England. Aston Villa F.C is otherwise known as 'The Lions' or 'Villa'. Their current manager is Paul Lambert, who was appointed as recently as 2nd June, 2012.
Aston Villa has yet to claim the English Premier League title, but they did win the old First Division on several occasions. The club has spent 100 seasons in top-flight English football and they are part of an 'exclusive club' consisting of just seven teams who have played in each of the Premiership seasons since it began.
Based in the Midlands, Villa's arch-rivals are Birmingham City and when a fixture is played between these two clubs, the game is known as the Second City Derby. Other rivals that are classed as being within relatively close proximity include West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Aston Villa became one of only five English clubs to win the European Cup back in 1982 and they still hold the record for having scored the most league goals in the top league, when the team scored 128 goals. This is a record they have held since the 1930/31 season. Villa's home colours are generally white shorts and a claret and blue shirt with sky blue sleeves.
