Wigan Athletic Football Club formed in 1932, making them the youngest of all Premier League clubs and their home ground, the DW Stadium, is located in Wigan, which is in Greater Manchester. The club is otherwise known as the 'Latics', which stems from the word Athletic and their current manager is Roberto Martinez, who was appointed in June 2009. Wigan shares its home ground with a rugby league club and in the 2011/12 season, Wigan finished 15th in the Premier League.
The club hasn't won any major awards, but since 1995, they have managed to climb from the Third Division (fourth tier) right up to the Premier League where they remain today. They were second division champions in the 2002/03 season and they were also football League Cup finalists in 2006.
Based in Greater Manchester, Wigan Athletics main rivals today include Bolton Wanderers, but they also share rivalries with clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Oldham Athletic, Preston North End and Blackpool. The clubs home colours include blue shorts with a blue and white shirt. The kit is manufactured by a company called MiFit and their main sponsor is an Asian gambling operator called 12Bet. |
