Sunderland Association Football Club formed in 1897 (originally named Sunderland and District Teachers) and their home ground, The Stadium of Light, is based in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The club is an association football club who are otherwise known as 'The Black Cats' and their current manager is Martin O'Neill, who was appointed in December 2011. The club moved from its old ground, Roker Park, in 1997.

The club has won several different trophies in its long history, but they have never won the Premier League. Sunderland won the FA Cup on two separate occasions and they were also runners up of the same prestigious footballing event on two separate occasions.

Based in the North East of England, the clubs arch rivals are Newcastle United. When these two teams play against each other, the fixture (which has been contested since 1898) is known as the Tyne-Wear Derby. Sunderland recorded their first win in this local derby for almost 30 years in the 2008/09 season.

Sunderland's home colours include black shorts with a red and white striped shirt. The kit is manufactured by adidas and the main club sponsor is Invest in Africa.
